How to start in Texas
- Have a fit callA short conversation about where you are in your hours, the setting you work in, and what you want from supervision.
- Sign the Supervisory Agreement FormIf you are applying for your associate license, the agreement goes in with the application. If you are changing or adding a supervisor, the Supervisor Change Form is filed with BHEC, and supervision cannot begin until the Board's office approves it.
- Meet regularly and log your hoursSupervision records are kept for every session. When supervision ends, your supervisor submits the Supervised Experience Documentation Form within 30 days.
Texas requires associates to say they are supervised, and by whom, on marketing, websites, billing, and intake forms. BHEC proposed amendments to these rules in August 2026, including changing the four-hour minimum to a monthly average. We will update this page if they are adopted.

FAQ
Supervision questions.
How long does it take to go from LPC Associate to LPC in Texas?
At least 18 months. Texas requires 3,000 hours of supervised experience, including 1,500 hours of direct client counseling, and does not allow them to be completed in less than 18 months. Many associates take longer, depending on their caseload. The associate license expires 60 months after it is issued.
How many supervision hours do I need each month in Texas?
Current Texas rules require at least four hours of supervision per month while you are counseling, unless your supervisor approves an extended leave of a month or more in writing. No more than half of your total supervision can be group supervision.
Can supervision be done online?
Texas's LPC rules do not specify that supervision must be in person. Format is discussed at the fit call.
How do I change supervisors in Texas?
File the Supervisor Change Form with the Behavioral Health Executive Council. Supervision with a new supervisor cannot begin until the Board's office approves the change. You can have no more than two approved supervisors at one time.
How much does LPC supervision cost?
Katrina's rate is $80 per hour. Rates vary widely across Texas; published figures range from about $55 to $175 an hour. Supervision is paid by the associate or, in some settings, their employer.
What is the difference between an LPC-S and an LPC?
An LPC is licensed to practice independently. An LPC-S has been approved by the Texas Council to supervise LPC Associates, which requires holding the LPC in good standing for at least five years and completing a 40-hour supervision course or a doctoral-level supervision course.
Licensing rules on this page are summarized from the Texas board's published rules and are general information, not legal advice. Boards amend their rules; confirm current requirements with the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council before relying on them.
