Watching your teenager struggle is one of the hardest things a parent can experience. You want to help, but adolescence can make connection feel complicated. The good news is that your support matters enormously, even when it does not feel like it is landing.
Listen more than you fix
When a teen opens up, the instinct to jump in with solutions is strong. But often what they need most is to feel heard. Try reflecting back what you hear before offering advice. Sometimes simply being understood is the relief they are looking for.
Watch for the signs
Withdrawal, changes in sleep or appetite, falling grades, loss of interest in things they once loved, or increased irritability can all signal that a teen is struggling. Trust your instincts. You know your child.
Keep the door open
You do not need the perfect words. Letting your teen know you are there, without pressure or judgment, keeps the connection alive. Small, consistent moments of presence often matter more than big conversations.
When therapy can help
Sometimes a teen needs a safe space outside the family to process what they are feeling. Therapy gives them exactly that: a confidential, non-shaming place to build emotional confidence and learn tools they will carry for life.
