Getting Started

What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

If you have never been to therapy before, the unknown can feel like the hardest part. You might wonder what you are supposed to say, whether you will be judged, or if you will somehow do it wrong. Here is the truth: there is no wrong way to start. A first session is simply the beginning of a conversation, and a good therapist will guide it gently.

It starts with the basics

Before you attend your first session, you will be asked to complete consent forms, a few brief assessments, and an intake questionnaire that help your therapist prepare. Most logistical questions can be handled before you ever sit down for your first appointment. This gives your therapist some background without you having to start from zero, and it usually helps guide the first session while reducing that feeling of being put on the spot the day of.

Your therapist will review confidentiality, explain how sessions work, and answer any additional questions that come up.

You set the pace

Your therapist will invite you to share what feels top of mind and what brought you in. You do not need a polished story or a clear diagnosis. You can simply talk about what has been weighing on you. If you are not sure where to begin, that is completely normal, and your therapist will help you find a starting point. You are never expected to share more than you are ready to.

It is a two-way fit

A first session is also about whether the two of you are a good match. The relationship between you and your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of progress, so it matters that you feel safe, heard, and respected. Pay attention to how you feel in the room. Trust is allowed to build over time.

What happens next

By the end, you and your therapist may sketch out some early goals or simply agree to keep exploring. There is no pressure to have it all figured out. Therapy is a process, and the first step is just showing up. At Soft Power Psychotherapy, we keep that first step small on purpose, because healing should never require force.

There is no wrong way to start. The first step is simply showing up.
